The quote tweets of this are filled with people who are precious about Ancient Computer Truths which apparently shouldn’t be changed. At least Twitter is doing a good job keeping these garbage replies out of my notifications

Some students not getting files and directories doesn’t seem like a new problem.

Also wondering how these kids got through high school.

Nowadays Google Drive and Apple Files try to reinstate “File-ness” and it’s a bit of a mess. Also the fact that I have no guaranteed-delivery way of sending you a “file” breaks the “no-file” illusion for me. But otherwise agreed. I’d say it started with iTunes and iPhoto though.

This kind of abstraction is going to lead to a push for "right to repair" style laws in another decade when people realize they no longer know how to get their data out of a device they own

Yeah, that's going to be a nasty fight.

Surely directories are just an extension of everyday life organisation skills though? People put clothes into closets, food into fridges… etc. I’m amazed it takes more than 5 mins to explain a directory concept to anyone, I feel so old at 32

Attention to a label/location-recall strategy for persistent work is definitely a hurdle some people struggle with (or even remain unaware of). And especially at a single-app level, it's great that product stakeholders have tried to tackle that. That said...

This isn't "great design", it's a failure to understand the reasoning behind existing abstraction. My iPhone is the most annoying device I own to get files off of. Everything else has a simple folder hierarchy that's easy to understand.

Thank God someone else feels this way
