So proud and excited to launch my side project into a real life feature at @Airbnb! https://www.theverge.com/2021/7/29/22599837/airbnb-host-list-wifi-speeds-remote-work-app …pic.twitter.com/0V6wKrFKIL

i couldn’t tell from the screenshots, but what’s to prevent hosts from taking their phone to fast wifi elsewhere and running the test?

Great question! We check that the SSID of the network they’re connected to is the same as what’s on the listing before we let them run the test.

So what’s to stop hosts from renaming their SSIDs to the fastest one they can find around? I respect the work put into feature but am wondering why the measurements aren’t being taken from the guests’ app.

Oh, totally. There’s definitely a way to scam the test, we’re just making it a little bit harder. As for why it’s not on the guest side, the most annoying answer is that I happen to work on the host-side of the app.

We’d love to add this functionality to the guest side though! As a guest, when would be a convenient time to ask you to run a speed test? Right when you connect to wifi? Some kind of a mid-trip check in? Or should we not ask and run it in the background?

(i’m more of a host, btw) i’d say any time the guest has the app open is fair game. you should get the guest app team to gamify this and checkin like you guys gamify amenity completion!

Quick approach: Any time a customer opens up the app and you think it's at the venue and you would need a new speed test Later/needs-meetings-and-buy-in-approach: You want to move the reviews more to "at venue" so that people can give more precise feedback. You add wifi to that.

Agreed with the passive approach of asking when the renter opens the Airbnb app while at the venue. And you should include a link in all the FAQs about slow internet. As well as in the wifi sheet in the message thread with the host.
