What's everyone's favourite article to link to about "why retail banking in the US is so far behind the rest of the world"?

Not an article, but I like to point out that if there are fifty states and each state has at least several banks that's a LOT of banks that need to accept a new standard in order to make any improvement

Some of it is that, for sure. But there are deep inefficiencies at the Federal level where the infrastructure for interbank settlement happens. It hasn't moved in decades compared to EU where everything is realtime now.

And the EU has 5,500 banks vs 5,200 in the US. It comes back to political willingness and regulatory capacity.

True, and EU is not exactly soft-touch on regulation either.

Not an article but anecdotes: My first US bank I banked with closed my account when I said on the phone that I wish US banks would be more like EU banks after some issue. He just said “I don’t think you can bank with us anymore.” They sent a check by mail with the balance 🤦‍♂️

I'd been comparing the US to the UK, but you're right: the EU is a much more sensible comparison

UK is really quite good as well, retail banking is so seamless everyone just takes it for granted here.
