I’ve been going back and forth on this but I think this (thread) is the best take on that articlehttps://twitter.com/davekeating/status/1379370228862361607?s=21 …

There are reasons for optimism. An alternative view from that dominant in media right now. EU has had a slow vaccine rollout compared to 5 *exceptional* countries, but looking globally its doing fine and pace is now increasing toward rates similar to US. https://www.politico.eu/article/europe-vaccination-coronavirus-success-story/ …

The problem is that we are slower than the US because our politicians did worse than Trump. We should be ahead of the pack instead of comparing ourselves to average

I’m also disappointed we’re not closer to the US but would it have been better for the world if we kept all these doses to ourselves and been at double our current rate? Then countries like Canada (and lots more) would still have zero vaccineshttps://twitter.com/davekeating/status/1375166320082366469?s=21 …

Half. Roughly half (77 million out of 165 million) of the vaccine doses made in the EU since December have been exported. 21 million went to the UK. How many of the vaccine doses made in the US & UK have been exported? None. https://twitter.com/vonderleyen/status/1375090365254934531 …

I think the reality is that the US and UK rightly anticipated that vaccine supply would be limited for a long time and should not be exported, whereas the EU just assumed everything would be fine

Yep I agree that was naive, but (as that article mentioned) that’ll be over soon as the supplies are picking up, and the main problem will be distribution as it is now in the US:https://twitter.com/erictopol/status/1379521266273546240?s=21 …

Tuesday has been the lowest number of vaccination day of reporting for the week, and today is no exception (1.4 million). But what is especially disappointing is there are >50 million doses out there that haven't gotten into people, a steadily growing gap (graph @CohoKelly) pic.twitter.com/D3G4EuM8ld

It’s also pretty interesting that we went completely mental here about 900k doses sitting on a shelf, while 50m in the US (2.5x more adjusted for population) doesn’t seem to be getting much attention
