The lesson here is that being a country with a higher GDP counts for a LOT, even after accounting for inequality.
Isn’t the lesson here that you can live well on lower income if you don’t have to worry about healthcare, education, or social security?
Government transfers are included in the measure, so that will include social security. The difference in health care will only be the difference in out-of-pocket costs.
Makes sense to include social security payouts, but I assume it doesn’t include money people have to set aside for their retirement themselves while they work
And wouldn’t you need a constant higher income/savings to offset irregular but large out of pocket health care costs? Basically, higher income as an insurance against going bankrupt
After living in a couple of European countries as well as the United States, I can’t imagine anyone picking a low income life in the US if they have the choice
