It’s often too much for direct investments, so they’ve funded funds. Like facebook people did with Iconiq (an investor in Adyen ;-)

Well tell that to the founders in cases where they are also three classes behind in the waterfall of liq prefs. Giving same class shares comes at a price, they were willing to give that to employees.
