This is from the newspapers who were advocating an exemption from AB5. Sound familiar?pic.twitter.com/cSDWDfe2dI

There are many things wrong with labor regulation in this country. For one, health insurance should not be tied to a job. But it’s the system we have and we shouldn’t lock in an exemption for a particularly disruptive industry

Yes, I'm glad that 22 does require companies to pay for gig workers' healthcare. There's a lot of flat-out misinformation out there about what is in 22 (including in Li & Kurtis's posts), which is upsetting.

If you're interested in some of the philosophical arguments on what flex work should look like, read this. Uber advocates that governments require gig companies to deposit funds into a "benefits fund", on an hourly basis (pg12): https://ubernewsroomapi.10upcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Working-Together-Priorities.pdf …

The healthcare benefits defined in prop 22, just like the minimum wage and the other benefits, are low and available for few drivers.

The below text seems reasonable to me, but I can understand if not everyone agrees. However I do think that the "22 denies drivers healthcare" arguments in anti-22 articles are misleading if they don't address 22's healthcare provisions.pic.twitter.com/oMRsTBINEk

There are so few people who will reasonable qualify for this that I think it’s fair to say that this denies healthcare. 25 hour on trip time is realistically more than a 40 hour work week.

With regards to Uber’s benefits fund proposal: I’m not convinced that a third labor category is necessary or good, but at least it is refreshing to see the honesty that drivers would have to choose between PTO and healthcare but won’t get both

The thing I don't understand about these complaints is, how is being an employee better? At least the proposal guarantees benefits, and allows you to flex them if you get benefits through a spouse/etc. And allows for benefits even if you don't hit a min weekly hour threshold.pic.twitter.com/25K764fLyP

The biggest change will be that it opens up the road to a union and collective bargaining agreements, which drivers deserve

Curious if you have any hypothesis as to why this wouldn’t make taxis crap again?
