Why pay for it in tax if you choose to not need it. For schools that’s a little harder bc most people shouldn’t homeschool. But also no reason why people who have kids shouldn’t pay for school directly.
I agree it should be simpler. One big way of doing so is to not charge as much for basic services, so you don’t have to subsidize them. If health insurance was €10 instead of €100 per month you wouldn’t need healthcare subsidies. Etc.

The main problem with giving subsidies for such expensive services is that the government is putting tens of thousands of euros on people's bank account for filing a form. This attracts LOTS of fraud. The story in the Netherlands should be about that.

You don't have that when you make it free (for some people or all). Way fewer attack vectors for fraud and much less administrative overhead.
