I was very excited to discover Convexity earlier this year + am still working through backlog of posts, because it's one of the few blogs, like mine, that does obsessively detailed, nerdy, breakdowns of Chinese tech in English based on actual original primary sources.

I think that App clips & Wechat’s MP differ a lot. To me it seems like the end goal of Clips is to extend Apple’s iMessage like lock-ins to O2O. NFC is anyway more frictionless than QR codes. Add Apple Card/Pay to mix and you get a packaged offering that’s hard to compete with.

“NFC is anyway more frictionless than QR codes” — Don’t think that’s actually true, considering how much more QR codes are used by actual people. QR code scanning is an explicit process, while NFC is just a guess whether you hold everything correctly

I think QR codes works like a network effect magnet, where you pull users to a defined env and then onboard them. It’s slow and inefficient. Apple already does that by virtue of having hardware vertically integrated. Not to mention how easy it is to create fake QR code tags.

1000x this. The r^0 of NFC is far lower than QR codes.
