I can't imagine a big bank would buy them, because the cost of moving their existing customers over to this new infra would be uneconomical

What about launching a new brand on the infra?

Very difficult. Cost of acquisition is the largest driver of consumer bank economics and a new brand will have to spend much more than an existing large bank to gain consumer awareness and trust

Doesn’t matter that much, most of the banks that operate across Europe don’t have their customers in one app anyways. As long as you can still count them as a customer and their money as being part of your bank...

It definitely works to operate different systems in different countries, but not sure if anyone has successfully done that within the same country

‘De Niks Bank’ — that will work well: “Let me check how much is in my account... Niks!”

Ah probably you mean for the existing banks. I think that indeed could work. Keeping separate. I always found it a good move, ground-up builds outside the bank. Move over when it’s big enough.
