This is definitely a problem. Though would love to know what kind of solution you hope for: (a) Google/Apple give contact tracing data to every government (b) Google/Apple give data to some governments (which ones?) (c) Something else

Probably mix. We were looking into option to have access only to the limited amount of data, those that trigger exposure. And by “we” is meant epidemiologists. Neither me, nor any one else in Gov. But I understand the slippery side in global context.

What would be an example of such data? As someone who has build sensitive global tech systems, I wouldn’t know how to decide which governments are trustworthy. So I understand their approach of not giving anything to anyone.

We were trying to mirror what’s done by our national CDC in the analogue world re COVID contact tracing. Being able to link the contact to the case (as medical/health data) is an important part to analyze virus, it’s spread and determine further actions.

That kind of data probably isn’t something Apple and Google would want to hand over to Saudi Arabia or Venezuela (or Malta!), so I can see why Apple and Google wouldn’t allow for that at all
