Companies are great at at this! ...exactly when it commoditises their complement.

Exactly! Open source support by companies works as long as it contributes to their strategyhttps://www.joelonsoftware.com/2002/06/12/strategy-letter-v/ …

And most of Uber’s open source projects are driven by engineering vanity instead of company strategyhttps://github.com/uber

I don't actually know if I'm understanding your point correctly. Should a company like Uber only open-source things related to ridesharing?

The only open source projects that would be successful at Uber are the ones which reduce the cost of suppliers/complements

Open sourcing the self-driving stack would work to reduce the car/driver cost, if Uber has a strong enough lock on the marketplace. Similar to how Android puts a computer with Google ads into the hands of more people.

That's a bit of a grand take. Not every project is going to change the world, but every well-done project builds goodwill and respect and that kind of thing adds up. My point was more that it's never incentivized or rewarded at any level usually

Respect, unfortunately, doesn’t build a business though. It could be part of a marketing budget perhaps.

Ignore incentives and get outcompeted by business that don’t :(

The PM has turned this into a thread about product and business metrics when the point was that companies like to have their names on things they didn't actually have anything to do with. That's the lie! Thijs you owe me a beer for hijacking this thread

LOL. Will do after this virus debacle is done with. The broader point is that companies only value open source and reward it if the project contributes to the strategy. Everything else is lip service by engineering leaders to appease contributors.
