@ThijsNiks Turns out Deutsche Telekom is passing aggregate data to the RKI already to model population movements. https://www.golem.de/news/gesetzentwurf-regierung-plant-handyortung-potenziell-infizierter-2003-147408.html …pic.twitter.com/HbI11f12w2

They’re also working on something that would enable tracing likely with the same cell location data (but as of yet unclear). I wish a team of 25 people from 12 institutions all the luck in the world in shipping something. They’re going to need it. https://www.golem.de/news/gesetzentwurf-regierung-plant-handyortung-potenziell-infizierter-2003-147408.html …pic.twitter.com/iIqJkSeDhV

Germany is exploring digital tracing of potentially infected people. - This is mostly a policy and service design problem. Don’t focus on what looks like a pretty coarse dataset. - Good luck shipping with a 25 people team drafted from 12 institutions. https://www.golem.de/news/gesetzentwurf-regierung-plant-handyortung-potenziell-infizierter-2003-147408.html …pic.twitter.com/Emt3HxCOhv

It’s the right move, but that sounds like an awful organizational setup

I don’t get how mobile cell location is going to be useful. It’s so coarse that the privacy concerns are also not as nearly as pointed as say of GPS.

It will be pretty effective actually: You mostly need to know which phones hang out together. So you have 10/15 minutes windows and that should give you enough data to reduce noise/smooth signal

The Chinese QR-code scanning thing is going to be hard to enforce without a guy sitting at a desk at every entrance of everything.

We don't need it at the China scale for it to already be effective. Checking highway and subway entrances solves a lot already. Requiring companies to check their employees would be huge progress.
