As a software developer IMO you deserve a starting salary of at least 50K if not more. Lmk if you're interested in roles at Uber in AMS

That’s the problem with Uber in Ams - it inflates salaries so much (~ +50% to market), so ppl start thinking that any software engineers should make as much. Uber is an exception, not a rule. When I came to Ams in 2011, I was making 54K/yr as a senior eng. 8.5 yrs of experience

Yup, Uber in Amsterdam is above market and more in tune with London and (somewhat) Zurich. It shouldn’t be a yardstick, but I would definitely encourage people to seriously look for opportunities that pay well (either in Amsterdam or other cities)

Payment should not be the deciding factor. As a matter of fact, a well paid job could easily become a golden cage - you would not be able to easily switch to a job with market salary. I would definitely NOT encourage to look for another job just for a salary increase.

That’s fair. There are lots of important factor: Who do you work with, what do you work on, do you get to learn, does it allow you to live close to family, etc.

Replying to @thijsniks @pmazurin and
I do think there are lots of people who could find a job that’s as fulfilling *and* better paid. And more money (up to a point) really does solve many of life’s problems

There are studies that (in the US) salary's contribution into happiness is limited by 75k. After that its contribution diminishes drastically - people who are making 100-200k are usually not happier than the ones who are making 75k For instance: https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/20/how-much-money-you-need-to-be-happy-according-to-wealth-experts.html …
