I’m pretty happy with my current comp, but it wasn’t always great. People from FAANG companies have much better negotiating grounds. As an L4 at Uber I was paid $115k coming from a startup while former-FAANG colleagues with the same level/experience made $140k+. I didn’t know

To Uber’s credit, they made a massive salary adjustment for everyone in 2017 to try to course correct this problem. Anyone below the midpoint for their level was moved to the midpoint or 5%. That was a 22% raise for me. IIRC midpoints were L4: mid-$140k L5A: $167k L5B: $178k?

Location unfortunately is often a factor. I’ve lived in SF or NY my entire professional career. IMO though, if your company pays SF salary anywhere, it should offer it everywhere.

Not sure if I agree on this. Paying the same percentile in base for each market to cover living costs makes sense to me (and it’s ok to find cheaper labor!). Equity compensation should perhaps be less depend on location, if you view it as owning a percentage of the company.
