the most annoying thing about not being on facebook is navigating the waters of group messaging: what app do we all use? whatsapp? Telegram? No, one person isn't on telegram. Sms? Ugh.

RCS is not end-to-end encrypted, so I give it a 5% chance for Apple to support it

Apple supports SMS, also not encrypted... I'd say RCS is more not in their monopoly-building-interest and encryption is a very convenient crutch to get out of that

There is definitely a strategic benefit for not supporting RCS, but I suspect they genuinely don’t want to offer something insecure. Sms is one of those weird holdovers, but no need to make that more attractive

Imo, Choosing not to adopt a widely accepted standard in a dominant market position (let alone not contributing to it) is dubious at best

Fair, but I would consider the lack of end to end encryption to be fatal regardless of market position. RCS is outdated 13 year old technology pushed by telcos who are incapable of working faster

The problem/reason for this is obvious: who would hold the encryption keys? WhatsApp is only "secure" if you trust them to hold your key and not use it to decrypt when they feel like it, which is arguably just as problematic!

Key management is always tricky, but still way better than telcos throwing up their hands in the air and not doing anything
