Everyday the thought hits me that I live in a country with private health care and it bothers me equally every time. I moved away from Sweden almost 6 years ago, will I ever ever let this go or nah?

I have never experienced a public option and none of my friends has run into private problems, but agree it is… weird. I’m curious to know which piece is most unsettling to you?

I think it’s smoother and faster care than in Sweden and what I experienced with the NHS when living in the UK. However there’s so many things that still bother me; 1) it’s a very high cost each month, for healthcare I might use max 2-3 times a year.

What makes it feel like it’s a very high cost? The fact that you didn’t have to pay it yourself before? At €120/m it’s lower than rent, groceries, transport, etc. But probably triple of cell phone bills https://www.consumentenbond.nl/zorgverzekering/premieoverzicht-basisverzekering …

Because i pay the same amount of tax on average, yet have this additional cost of €120 each month. Hence why it feels higher and more expensive and inefficient for me as I do not go to the doctor once a week but more like 2 times a year. Yet pay this premium

Right, but on average tax+insurance in the Netherlands is the same amount as just the tax in Sweden (depends a bit on how much you make though). So it’s an interesting (and important!) psychological consideration

Very good point, however I like efficiency and I rather have my taxes higher and let it pay for me + people who might need it more than me and get it done with. Slowly getting use to it here but it still bothers me haha

And here I am coming from the US, stoked to be paying relatively so little for insurance that includes partial dental

For sure, any system in Europe is massively more affordable and equitable than the U.S.

In a sense, the Dutch system is a perfected Obamacare. Still curious we never moved to the ease of a single payer system
