Everyday the thought hits me that I live in a country with private health care and it bothers me equally every time. I moved away from Sweden almost 6 years ago, will I ever ever let this go or nah?
I have never experienced a public option and none of my friends has run into private problems, but agree it is… weird. I’m curious to know which piece is most unsettling to you?

I think it’s smoother and faster care than in Sweden and what I experienced with the NHS when living in the UK. However there’s so many things that still bother me; 1) it’s a very high cost each month, for healthcare I might use max 2-3 times a year.

What makes it feel like it’s a very high cost? The fact that you didn’t have to pay it yourself before? At €120/m it’s lower than rent, groceries, transport, etc. But probably triple of cell phone bills https://www.consumentenbond.nl/zorgverzekering/premieoverzicht-basisverzekering …

Secondly, I pay the same amount of tax here - if not more - as I do in Sweden, so I’m not sure to how it does not cover just the entire health care system?

The (employee tax + employer tax + healthcare insurance) is about exactly the same rate between the Netherlands and Sweden, so effectively the same money distributed differently. With the benefit of a public option being less hassle for citizens

Lastly, it’s upsetting and goes against my core political values. Healthcare should be tax funded and accessible to all and there should never be any transaction involved. I don’t like the idea that I’m paying for insurance and self costs up to a certain amount

It’s a cost for people who might not be in the same lucky position that I am in, it’s also ridiculous that it’s privatized yet subsidized. National healthcare is important and fundamental and it makes people feel safe. Health does not have a price tag in my book.
