What makes fiber communication networks different from sewage, highways, or electricity networks? If the latter are natural monopolies and often government owned, why wouldn’t the former?

Not sure what that changes though. Fear that a government wouldn’t invest to keep up?

Back in NZ we realized this and made it a public utility!

Even better, because it's a public utility they're also regulated- and mandated to install fiber for all for free to the home, no matter the difficultypic.twitter.com/UOc2YS9fLV

Similar in Sweden. Fiber network is mainly owned by government and last 5-10% of the country built with government subsidies. Service layer however is private and that’s where you see competition.

The build out been seen as a strategic advantage for the country since the 90s. Goal for 2020: 95% of country covered with > 100 mbit/s broadband.

Choice. We all 💩/commute/turn the lights on, but some of us choose to get faster internet. And if we can choose, we'll pay for more/better. And well, our govt would do anything to stimulate competition and commerce. Public transport, snailmail – you name it. But is it *better*?
