Other than appealing to my 12 year old brain when riding, I don't think they really make cities better... just hides all of the actual problems

Instead of hiding the problems, I think it will highlight the huge issues a lot of US cities have with footpath maintenance, lack of bicycle infrastructure and general people unfriendlyness of their streets. Gateway drug to cycling.

Agreed, scooters highlight instead of hide infrastructure problems. Public goods are paid for with taxes. And taxes create behavioral incentives. So pick between parking concerns or mobility improvement, but you can’t have it both ways.
