Hot take :p: grandiose Dutch bike parking complexes are silly investments compared to quality bikeshare - considering how uniform and generic the bikes Dutch actually use are. It's no surprise then that the government owns and operates plenty of car parking garages too. https://twitter.com/BrooklynSpoke/status/1033274492821401600 …

Things could change if bikeshare were allowed to operate and steadily complement/replace private bike ownership. For now, the mentality seems to be accommodate all vehicles, bike or car.

Bikeshare is most useful when: *Space is scarce *Trips are short (1-4km) *A generic, slow bike will do *Theft is a concern *Bike maintenance is seen as a nuisance *Ridership demand is high across time and place All of those describe urban Dutch biking already.

The Dutch and Danish are so good at bike infrastructure that onlookers assume everything they do is good. But some of it owes to cultural quirks, and not necessarily good sense.

Danish and especially Dutch emissions per capita are markedly higher than that for the UK, Italy, France, and Belgium. (Germany and Norway are in between) And the Netherlands only has 11% fewer cars per capita than Germany. https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/tgm/refreshTableAction.do?tab=table&plugin=1&pcode=t2020_rd300&language=en …pic.twitter.com/0vKctqN72X

From what I saw on a bike trip in the Netherlands (eg Almere), the Dutch have a predilection for car centric but bikable suburbs for new housing. Bike in the 'burb, but drive far to work.

This Japanese solution of underground bike parking vaults respects what a city is - a place where space is scarce. It's costly, at $25 a month per bike, though that may be unsubsidized. But it frees up precious space. Like next to train stations. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnn.com/style/amp/japan-underground-bike-vaults/index.html …

      Replying to @AsherDeMontreal

I love bike sharing and definitely think there is room for that on the Dutch market, but leasing seems to be the more predictable (ie, better) version in cities which have good infrastructure already https://swapfiets.nl/en
