No, you can use it, but it wants to broken down and worked like the dirty green it is. Beat and massage that stuff with oil and/or vinegar first. It's too tough and fibrous just to be tossed in willy-nilly. Seriously, lay into that shit and it transforms.

Or forget the lettuce altogether. There are so many combinations of non-leafy vegetables, legumes, pulses, cruciferous brassicas, and grains, you could make an entire year of salads with no lettuce at all.
