Nerds arguing really sucks because you'll end up giving each other a reading list and schedule the discussion for a later date just so you can be on the same page In other news I've somehow gotten myself into a 'read tax law and chill' sesh
Instead of arguing and making assignments, you could get together to present little TED talk type presentations of stuff everyone has learned on their own, voluntary, exploration, and thinks is cool enough to share.

it’s more important to be able to articulate what you know & learn than to recommend (or demand lol) source material. Sometimes the latter is necessary, but less often then most might think.
