The commentary on Thomas Pynchon’s “Gravity’s Rainbow” suggests that Gottfried is named for the god Freyr, and for the name’s German meaning of “God’s peace”. But surely the more Pynchonian explanation is that it is a pun on the fact that he “got fried” at the end of the novel?
Look, I’m not saying Pynchon isn’t picking names because they derive from Teutonic mythology, Orphic esotericism, or the Proto-Indo-European word for prick. But this is the guy who named a character Mike Fallopian.pic.twitter.com/IkD2I3CM1I
I think the Pynchonian explanation is that it works both ways.
