for what it's worth, my rabbit trail into theory began with trying to think through the implications of Calvino's Invisible Cities

I actually had a similar trajectory! Calvino was something of a eye-opener, although I was already set on the path by the new wave SF I read as a teenager.

My hot take for today: Cronenberg is Theory Fiction.
-
Fisher does refer to Videodrome! -- and Toy Story, of all things.
-
Cronenberg's 'Crimes of the Future' is essentially a silent film, with only long narrations. It's very reminiscent of Burroughs, detailing strange factions in a future where a mad scientist has killed all women through poisoned makeup. Kind of a proto-Videodrome with no sfx.
-
It reminds me a lot of CCRU theory fiction stuff like Lemurian Time War.
