I’m reminded of America’s frontier in Pynchon’s Mason & Dixon: the “Rubbish-Tip for subjunctive Hopes, for all that may yet me true,” as yet unknown to “the bare mortal World that is our home, and our Despair” (345). In our globally-mapped age, whence the dreams of other worlds?
