If I'm not a paying subscriber of YouTube Music (ad-supported version) and I want to listen to my purchased songs on the mobile app, will I be able to listen to those with the screen turned off? Or do I need to become a paying subscriber? @youtubemusic @GooglePlayMusic #Android

Background Play feature is only available with paid YouTube Music Premium subscription. The app will continue running in the background while you use other apps or when the phone is locked. Here's more info: https://goo.gl/Qpakwe . Hope this helps!

So just to confirm, I can't listen to purchased music in the background if I am on the free version?

Unfortunately, we don't have this feature available with free version. But, you can surely explore our free trial, which is for a month for all Android devices. However, Apple Music has different pricing options and a three month vs one month free trial. Hope this helps!
