As I mentioned earlier today, there are three family detention centers in the U.S. - one in Pennsylvania and two in Texas. There have been legal battles surrounding all three facilities because of licensing issues & the prolonged detention of children.

But individual states have also done the dirty work of the federal government. In TX in 2015, the TX Dept. of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) was trying to ELIMINATE minimum child safety standards in family detention centers:https://rewire.news/article/2015/11/24/court-blocks-effort-license-family-detention-centers-child-care-facilities/ …

The battle in TX to make “outrageous exceptions” for family detention centers that would allow them to be licensed as “child care facilities” under reduced minimum standards was very lengthy:https://rewire.news/article/2015/12/10/advocates-dont-license-texas-detention-centers-child-care-facilities/ …

Because the American public and media didn't really care about migrant children prior to the Trump admin, TX was actually allowed to move forward with its plan to operate family detention at reduced standards and there was little uproar:https://rewire.news/article/2016/02/16/profit-texas-prisons-reduce-standards-holding-children/ …

If you're looking for resources to learn about family detention, I recommend
@Grassroots_News, who have been fighting the family detention battle for a long time & who are largely forced TX to comply with the "normal" licensing process:https://rewire.news/article/2016/06/02/judge-stops-licensing-detention-center-child-care-facility/ …Näytä tämä ketju -
Berks is also a case study in how feds work around the Flores Settlement. When women & children who had been detained at Berks for months heard former DHS secretary Jeh Johnson say the average length of stay was 20 days, they launched a hunger strike:https://rewire.news/article/2016/08/12/mothers-family-detention-launch-hunger-strike-will-get-alive-dead/ …

All of this is just to say that Trump's family separation policy was clearly inhumane and horrible, but so is his executive order. The indefinite detention of parents and children - the fucking imprisonment of families - should not have ever been an acceptable practice.

The Flores Settlement was put in place for a reason, it is harmful to subject children to detention. But their parents matter too. It is harmful to subject all people to prolonged detention, indefinite detention, etc. etc.
