Market absorbs many ambitions and competent status seekers. What kind of institution can act as a sponge for ambitions and incompetent ones? May social networks and reality shows be a solution? We cannot afford to have them in politics and subsequent decision making, obviously.

There’s the market, but not everyone is good at making money. There’s religion, but not everyone is good at asceticism. There’s literature and the arts and all that. Thing is none of those are well separated from politics. There’s a reason why the left has captured *everything*

Well, this gives a new meaning for the "ivory tower" metaphor. Generally, it is sold as a way to keep academicians from nuisances of crude reality, when in fact it is to keep them from meddling in affairs of general population.
-
Yes but any government who prides itself in good management is going to want to say it surrounds itself with “smart people”, so academia is a path to government influence. It’s really hard to close down. Not even China has.

It is a fundamental problem. It isn't enough to be a good ruler, you also have to project an image. Public expects an image different from practice of being good ruler, so you have to BS. And nobody is better at BS than "academics". Either you use them, or your opponents will.
