In China nothing is about the principle. Bureaucratic expediency and stability are more important. Why? Was a good question to ask at the beginning. To impulse assimilation, they say. It has, to a point.

but does affirmative action impulse assimilation?
-
one minority kid who goes to Chinese university is one kid that doesn’t go to madrassa or whatever.
-
what does the chinese kid do when he can't go to chinese university?
-
Who cares
-
what do 1000 chinese kids do when they can't go to chinese university?
-
They do something else. The borderline-passed kids who lose their places to minorities shouldn’t be in University in the first place. Not that the minorities should be there either, but still. Not a big deal.
-
your logic beats me and affirmative action is a *package* of measures
-
So? Why should I give a shit about the equality of Chinese ethnic policy when the Chinese themselves don’t care?
