Observing actual revealed preferences instead of listening to the media, the self proclaimed spokesmen of the people. How dare they?https://twitter.com/larsonchristina/status/1031572905405034496 …

China is attempting to use big data - in place of actually listening to citizens - to improve governance. The results range from promising to absolutely chilling, especially w/ policing. My article in @techreview's special issue on technology and politics: https://www.technologyreview.com/s/611815/who-needs-democracy-when-you-have-data/ …

I dunno... markets reveal preferences, actions reveal preferences... surveys don't. Putting people in reeducation camps because they have too many books or foreign friends is evil.

They're being thrown in camps for their ethnic affiliation, not their choice of literature.

I thought the article indicated it was first ethnic affiliation but that "camp" attendees were singled out on the factors I mentioned -- to the best anyone can figure. Did I misread?

People are thrown in for suspected Islamic/ethnic radicalism, which is often indicated by reading Islamic literature and having outside contacts. You made it sound people were thrown in jail for being literate. Not saying the whole thing isn't quite abhorrent.

Western ideology did not solve the eternal problem in Chinese governance. They tried republicanism. Didn't work. They tried communism. Didn't work even more. Then it dawned on the Chinese elite that they have always had the correct ideology, what's needed was western technology.

Well, could be their collective delusion. But it really looks like a promising solution to a bunch of social engineers.
