As far as I can tell, your argument seems to be that it's better for an angry Twitter mob to dictate Youtube policy than Youtube themselves. Do you generally agree or disagree with that sentiment?

As far as I'm concerned, the mob didn't dictate anything. YouTube could have easily done nothing about it like they almost always do, but they went and decided to try and do something about it without actually improving the way content is identified first.
