First, let's talk about table stakes: having a CoC is table stakes. You don't get cookies for that, it's the right thing to do full stop. For ORD Camp we make sure that every attendee acknowledges awareness and familiarity with it when they register (https://ordcamp.com/conduct/ )

Second, we have an independent CoC committee that handles all violations. After the event we post a transparency report (see above link).

But the part that I want to point out is this: In addition to your attendees and organizers being aware of this, you need to let EVERY PERSON WORKING YOUR CONFERENCE know that you have a CoC and you expect attendees to stick to it.

This means that every year before the conference I let the security staff, the cleaning staff, the facilities staff, and the cafeteria staff know that we expect every last one of our attendees to not only adhere to the policy, but to be kind to everyone working to make it happen

It's not enough to just have attendees be kind to each other--folks doing the hard operational work need to know that you have their back and that you expect that everyone to be kind to them as well. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I think the addendum should be in the code of conduct.
