Atlas' failed launch really shows how badly people want a new, fresh and GOOD MMO experience right now. People (including myself) were so eager to jump on this based on footage, only to be let down. Is it even possible anymore for someone to create the next good MMO?

Public perception might be of failed launch, but to me it's moreso proof that the public has no tolerance for even a little bit of trouble. I've been playing with a group of OW People and we've had a fantastic time so far. We simply grinded over the tough parts.

I see the potential in the game, and believe anything can be fun with friends. And yes it probably does get better beyond the start. However, first impressions are very important. Early Access has done them no favours, and turned a lot off of it, for good reason.

The friends thing is one of the biggest issues in game development these days. WoW and EQ were fun alone. It was through your solo fun that you met others and made endemic friends that lasted. Now to enjoy any game I feel like I need to bring friends with me.

MMO's have shifted away from the old EQ and WoW models in favor of casual player increase. Cross-realm servers, instancing, dungeon finders all helped contribute to the lack of meaningful relationship building within MMOs. EQ has kept pretty true which is why I still play.
