My father was granted release on parole today, after more than 40 years in prison!

Indeed. A big failure of society to not give them the support they need both during their time in jail and after, instead making it harder for them at every step.

It's a two way street. We can only burn so much $ on hardened criminals. OTOH, if a guy truly turns his life around in prison and wants to work and follow the rules, there should be (and is!) support for him.

With consequences (jail), .003% of the US population will rob a bank at least once in their lives. What do you think this % would be, if there were no consequences? I mean, if anyone could stroll into a B of A branch and walk out with $20,000. Throw out a number.

Well finding a good job is impossible in this Country after prison. Food for thought

There are millions of formerly incarcerated adults in the US working today.

Well, is prison for reform or punishment? If it's punishment then maybe we should just have the death penalty for most serious crimes. Also food for thought.

Prison exists primarily for the deterrent effect. It's the reason your local bank wasn't robbed 50 times today.

Incorrect. The most recent national figures show that less than 50 percent do - a decrease from the last national study.https://counciloncj.org/recidivism_report/ …

Thank you for posting this. By and large, it's the smaller property and drug crimes that have a higher recidivism rate. Murderers rarely commit another murder after release. Stealing, drugs, etc. is then committed because they're not allowed back into society.
