Sets of “sad losers” with similar ideological influences engaging in mass murder is a *pattern* of mass murder. That’s part of what the idea of homegrown terrorism explains, the radicalization of individuals through ideological influence to produce patterns of mass murder. https://twitter.com/jonkay/status/989458677789704192 …

But terrorism usually has a political goal. In these cases don't seem to. They are horrific hate crimes based on hateful ideas, & the causes more systemic than 'lone nutjob', but that doesn't make them terrorism, & nor should they need to be for us to see them aright.

Given the killer’s comments about being seeing as a continuation of the Isla Vista killings and explicitly advancing the “incel uprising,” I actually think there is an explicit political goal aligned closely with what we see from other terrorists.

That's giving way too much credit to him. What is the political goal? Kill women until they sleep with them? That's not at all the same as, say, far right nationalist/anti-govt (McVeigh), or ISIS-inspired, and so on. Dudes lashing out in hateful anger is not ipso facto political.

It isn’t the personal goal but the political goal. If he sees himself as affiliated with a broader community of incel/“western chauvinist” men, then that’s the relevant political cause to advance by drawing attention.

Incel/misogynistic online groups are pretty active and overt about this, which is why SPLC added two of them to the hate group index recently. Personal factors play a role, but so does political radicalization.

Right, but hate group doesn't necessarily mean what they do is terrorism, tho it can be. I'm open to this falling under the 'terrorism' umbrella, but I guess my main point is I worry we're getting to a place where we don't take things seriously unless we call them 'terrorism'.

And that's worrying because there is a ton of hate group and other systemic, ideological social activity which is definitely NOT terrorism but which needs to be dealt with, and which is a much, much bigger problem than terrorism is.

What empirical question are you waiting on to determine if this is terrorism? Or is it a conceptual question?
