These folks (Dreher, Singal, inter alia) aren’t that original. The “gay contagion” theory and the “gay predator” theory developed in the mid 20th century and remains popular with homophobic activist groups. Unsurprising that it’s been adopted again as a model in trans issues.https://twitter.com/roddreher/status/1053652817859276801 …

Nancy Knauer (@templelaw) has written on the gay contagion theory as it developed out of early obscenity law; as has Andrea Friedman (@WUSTL, history).

This persisted into the modern era, carried forward predominantly by religious groups (unsurprisingly, conversion therapy groups; the language of disease and cure cuts both ways), including advocates affiliates with the Catholic Church and the Family Research Council.

Unsurprisingly, FRC is a close ally of Pence, along with other anti-gay groups like Focus on the Family. These groups have adopted a social contagion theory of trans issues because it's a convenient way of scaring and mobilizing transphobic and homophobic folks with kids.

The “gay predator” theory has been extended in some obvious cases about trans folks (i.e. the bathroom law ads) as well as in the recent sports comments directed at @rachelvmckinnon as someone whose interest is a result of a “desire to dominate females” (see linked).pic.twitter.com/TndEmRWO5E

I could say more about it, so I will... the appeal to a scientific concept of contagion is a direct attempt to legitimize a position by making it appear scientific; the problem with this is that (a) there's no evidence to support these claims and (b) it is rhetorically effective.

Unfortunately, the fact that there's nothing that would remotely qualify as adequate empirical support doesn't matter, because the goal *isn't* to gain traction within the scientific community. It is to mobilize political groups. And you don't need a theory to do that.

We've seen the significance of political conspiracy theories expand enormously, with the contribution of ethically dubious journalism; this is another iteration of the pervasive phenomenon. Fin.

For those wondering why I included Singal’s name, I explain why he’s a pretty obvious (and certainly influential) case in two tweets here:https://twitter.com/thephilosotroll/status/1054594685904203776?s=21 …

He’s welcome to respond, but he’s one of the most widely read and unambiguous cases; he’s invoked “social contagion” with a claim to anecdotal evidence, suggested it is made credible by “what we know about the developing teenage brain, and associated it w parental acceptance. pic.twitter.com/LmGjwyER9b

Adding some notes on whether it is appropriate to refer trans-exclusionary views as "feminism" in lieu of the analysis of gender and sex that they offer:https://twitter.com/thephilosotroll/status/1054769845399474176 …

Presumably, the contents of conventionally accepted feminist literature should have something to do with understanding what feminism is... an awful lot of it involves directly pushing back on the association between a range of biological properties and the definition of "woman."
