I seem to remember that Martin West got into some trouble for writing "The East Face of Helicon". I gather that some Greek academics of a nationalistic persuasion didn't care for the idea that they were being assimilated to the Turks.

Indeed, though my somewhat oblique point was that he’d been making the argument for 30 years at that point. ‘Near Eastern influence’ hasn’t been a new idea for a long time, though people love to pretend it has been.
