Just read the Spectre and Meltdown papers. Thankfully I'm on Linux + AMD, so Meltdown doesn't affect me, but Spectre has officially scared the crap out of me. I'm turning off JS again.

TFW you try to compile an OpenGL shader that's embedded in a single line string and forget to remove the comment, so the entire program is commented out.

Still figured out how to segfault it within 5 minutes tho :P I use CWM for my window manager and Firefox’s GUI didn’t play nice with it when I double clicked on a certain part of the window.

Switched back to Firefox again since quantum is nice. Definitely want to see more safe languages used for applications that require security.

OS's are definitely hard, but it's not like these are impossible problems. We've seen huge improvements in PL (which I'd argue is equally as hard) over the last few years, so change is definitely possible - it just doesn't happen in OS's for some reason.

Windows is unusable, *nix's are held together with duct-tape and bubble gum, and don't even get me started on mobile OS's.

There's very little high-level composability between programs (besides pipes which are limited and pretty risky), and most of the tech is from the 80's. I understand that worse is better, but still - you'd think we'd have gotten past some of this crap by 2017.

Can we just bring Lisp machines back now? The current state of operating systems is simply laughable from basically every perspective.
