In 2023 a rare kind of #solareclipse will flash across #WesternAustralia, #TimorLeste and #WestPapua. Few understand what April 20’s eclipse is and even some eclipse-chasers will miss it out. That’s a huge mistake! By me for :

Nice #eclipse reference ! Although slightly west, north and northeast of #NovaScotia would be best for #TSE2024 (also next #TSE is on 20 April 2023).

Tempted to fly your Learjet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun? (Due on 8 April 2024.)
The Campaign for Better Transport says you should pay £thousands more in Air Passenger Duty.
You're so vain, you probably think this tax is about you.

First-ever images of a solar eclipse using a new ‘smart’ telescope

7/8: I was pleased with the Vespera’s performance. It tracked the Sun flawlessly and made it easy to follow the eclipse safely and effortlessly take photos. Next time I would set it up 30 minutes before the eclipse and make sure it was tracking and imaging before the eclipse.

6/8: What I did notice is that the solar filter can’t stand much cloud. Thin cloud is OK, but anything more and the view is hugely degraded – even though my regular optical telescope nearby (also wearing a solar filter) was still able to give me a usable view of the eclipse.

5/8: I was even able to zoom-in and see #sunspots. A sunspot is an area of intense magnetic activity on the surface of the Sun. It appears as a dark area on the solar disk.

4/8: It’s so stupidly easy to use. Once it was focused on the Sun – which it could only successfully do once there were a few minutes of clear sky – it gave me this live view which I could download to my phones camera roll, share on social or save as raw TIFF/FITS files.

3/8: Before using its excellent #Singularity app to get it focused on the #Sun I was given all kinds of warnings, things to check and instructions on how to position it. After all, pointing a telescope at the Sun without a solar filter would be … very bad.

2/8: #Vespera is 2-inch refractor with no eyepiece. Instead is has a Sony IMX462 sensor and sends live images to an app on a smartphone/tablet. It costs UK£2,100/US$2,499. Not cheap. I had it for a few days to test for . It now comes with solar filter ($99/£79).

1/8: Today’s partial #SolarEclipse has been and gone – and I () followed it in a new way. Today I tested for the first time at a solar #eclipse the Vaonis Vespera, a robotic smart #telescope that's controlled by an app and takes images. #vaonisvespera
