13/8/18 Pyrénées - My wife very kindly gave me part of the last day of our holiday to go botanising. I headed for a good patch of dark woodland with many damp gulleys and after a steep climb was delighted to come across this lone example of Epipogium aphyllum, the Ghost .

Another wonderful needle felt by that reminds me of wonderful things, though maybe not quite so wonderful in this case for the victim of Cordyceps militaris, a fungus which infects caterpillar larvae, killing them and growing out of them.

10/2/19 Wales - Early Star of Bethlehem (Gagea bohemica) is one of the rarest members of the British flora, restricted to a single steep slope on the side of a hill in Wales. It's not clear how a species better known from the Med found its way there but I'm very glad that it did!

Lots of noise today regarding we’re all entitled to our opinions. Mocking folk of either stance for being of particular political associations or low intelligence is only serving to further the rift and encourage hostilities - I can only assume that’s their intention 🙄

Our field partner of has carried out an impressive 33 reintroductions of rare plants in north west England since 2017! The lesser bladderwort is just one example - reintroduced populations are now significantly bigger than the donor site

In the evenings this week I’ve been felting Sweet Violets, Viola odorata. I’m hoping the lovely will approve as I’ve tried so hard to make it botanically correct with notched spur, sepals & sepal appendages 😉

Last April, post- video, while photographing one of the Helen's bee orchids of my favourite PhD sampling site. This little fellow landed on a flower, waiting for me to leave so he could just fix his "bed" 🥰🐝!

Ivy-leaved bellflower (Wahlenbergia hederacea) has stems so fine that the plant’s ivy leaves and dainty sky-blue trumpet flowers appear to float in thin air when spotted from a distance. Of course spotting it from a distance is no mean feat - it’s such a small plant!

Not long now until the annual pilgrimage up Pen-y-ghent looking for a profusion of purple Saxifraga oppositifolia. Who’s in this year? Was looking a bit bleak & snowy this afternoon as I passed on the train

Found loads more orchids not flowering yet this morning. Dash of colour added by Sand Crocus. Ticks galore too, tainting what was an otherwise thoroughly pleasant time.
