It’s close. Stay silent.

You turn and sprint away without answering. “Stop. STOP! It’s not too late,” I call out from behind you.

You stop and I begin to cautiously approach you. “Its going to be ok,” I say. “It’s still fresh.” You can’t help but notice my hand trembling just above my knife.

“It’s going to be ok,” I repeat as I embrace you. “Did you see its face?” “Yes.” You think your heart is going to explode in the ensuing silence. “I’m so sorry.” You wince as a blade punctures your side.

You slam me to the ground and in one fluid motion remove the blade from your side and place it at my throat. “I’m sorry,” I sputter. “But you can’t go on...you saw it...it’s in you. ITS IN YOU.”

You drop the bloody knife to the ground and rise to your feet. The wound on your side no longer hurts and has completely stopped bleeding. Something tugs at the back of your mind. You feel empty. Hollow. Tired.

Your mind is foggy and your consciousness fleeting...it would be so easy to just let it drift away...but you were doing something. What was it? People. You need to find people. You need to see them. Home. You begin to make your way there.

As you get closer your entire body begins to ache. Walking feels so unnatural. You hunch and begin to occasionally use all four limbs. Lights ahead. People. You open your mouth and release a guttural cry.

You hear the commotion of chatter in the building. People. Lots of people. You inch closer to the window, dragging your hands on the dirt below.
