Pay home health aides a living wage. There needs to be more incentive to get good people into this field.

Assisted living facilities allow patients more choice and allow them to live relatively independently with support. They're also extremely expensive. Plus, once a patient needs extensive support, a nursing home is usually the only option. It stinks.

My dad was in a great assisted living facility. I was lucky he have the savings to pay $7,000 a month. Once they could no longer take care of him, they referred him to a place (a literal home in a neighborhood) with only 6 patients and 24 hour nursing. That was $10,000 a month.

Good article, but is it really feasible for everyone to pay for 24/7 home care? Let's say we abolish nursing homes.. Inevitably, years from now someone's going to think "I'm driving all over town taking care of these people. Why don't I just have them live at MY house?"

24/7 home care is cheaper than a nursing home with better staff to patient ratio and better outcomes for the person The only obstacle is houses that aren't physically set up to be accessible

FiL w/full VA benefits who needs in-home care, or assisted living, but VA won't cover more than a 30 min nurse visit 1x/wk. He'll end up in a nursing home bc of this, with a higher care cost and a lower QoL. Makes no sense.

As someone who spent a few weeks of fall 2018 in a nursing home, which for the most part was a much better experience than the preceding month and a half, I could not agree more.
