Book bloggers there is a super handy flow chart on here - if you've been sent it, even if it's unsolicited and you haven't agreed to any content, you have to disclose it!

Thread about injury prevention for WRITERS, ILLUSTRATORS, COLORISTS, LETTERERS and anybody who sits at a computer for a living. Note: I am not diagnosing or treating any of you specifically, this is general information (don't sue me)

My older son really loves Scottish wildcats & wants to help them, so he's created this website with info about the cats & links to donate to & more: You should definitely watch the adorable wildcat kittens video on the introduction page!

I want to give students and folks struggling with this a practical exercise they can use to move past this. So here we go, an assignment thread!

Every time your CTO mentions AI the best thing to do is spray them directly in the face with a spray bottle filled with room temp water. This may startle them, but it does not hurt them and will curb the behavior.

Been thinking about Malinda Lo’s article on problems facing sapphic books and I can’t help but think of how rarely women in fiction get to be dangerous, vicious, broken with sharp edges that cut outwards not inwards - and be considered *more* compelling and attractive for it.

PS. Penguin Random House has announced it'll donate up to $10,000 to the Hurston Wright Foundation, which works to develop, discover, & support black authors. PRH says it'll give a dollar every time people tweet the hashtag So ... start tweeting!

  18. Seriously, context understanding matters. I say this when I fight for proper locale options and translations that are truly global. I say it when there is any machine learning or data bank made up as criteria. Context matters. But it didn't matter to B&N or Penguin.

  19. All the AI/ML can do is select the ones that don't explicitly say it is white skin. Unless the criteria has specified a white context in historical setting, background, nuances, like how Alice in Wonderland was written for Alice in Oxford. Context matters.

  20. If you give an AI all the classics and say "find what isn't white", for starters, given that most of it is actually "white" or has a white context, unless you've made the work of feeding it NOT classics & white authors, and feeding it contextual white content classified as white.

  21. There's a reason voice recognition fails for accents, and even a voice recognition bank in the US won't cater for British, Australian, etc accents. There's a huge bias in data sets. Anything outside of a specific data set precollected breaks the machine/AI.
