I'm actually not sure, but the best I can think of is that it means pulling some other person into the narrative control space to give them agency. Perhaps even a bystander who is viewing the gameplay. Does that make any sense at all? It's all rather confusing.

In written fiction second person is rare because it breaks the wall around the story world and admits the "user" (reader). In a videogame, the user is the player – who's already controlling the narrative. So there's no wall-breaking required. What does second person mean, then?

In fiction, first person indicates that the narrator is a character in the story, while third indicates that the narrator might not be a character. I think videogames are subtly different here: most 3rd-person games still place the "narrator" (player) in the story, with agency.

This is thought-provoking. One difference between written fiction and videogames is whether the author or the user (reader/player) creates the narrative. This muddies the water somewhat when defining what "second-person view" means.

This came up on Duolingo, and it reminded me that German is sometimes a little easier if you're familiar with older forms of English. In this instance, the question "wherefore art thou Romeo?" springs to mind... I suppose that would be "wofür".

Me, at 2200: "Well, that was a good evening with the writers' group. Time for bed and sleep!" Also me, at 2325: "How did I end up in this labyrinth of YouTube videos about microtonal scale tunings?"

Escape. (Hemispheres is drawing to a close soon, but it's been a lot of fun. Watch out for announcements... there might be a book at some point!)
