Basically, USGS scientists worked out which metals American industries are most likely to face 'supply shocks' for in the future, based on supply, demand, and where we're getting them. Spoiler: Topping the list are a bunch of metals that are critical for a green tech future.
What does that mean? A few things: 1. A green tech future will mean more mining 2. It's on us to figure out how to develop new mines responsibly, *before* we hit a supply crunch 3. We need to do a much better job extending the life of high tech devices & recycling them at EOL
Politics alert: The Trump admin is big into critical metals. Some green groups think it's a front for fast-tracking mining projects on public lands, which, fair. At the same time, these supply risks are real and not thinking about them now could come back to haunt us later.
