Aside from the inital scurry, total silence as I surveyed the room. Also as I type this, back in my sleeping bag, the noises have begun again.

I found some food under a couch. Food from downstairs that we had last night. I looked under everything, startled myself when I made eye contact with myself in a mirror (you know you’ve done it too), and found 3 open windows. But no live animal.

So I walked downstairs in the pitch black (this ranger station is so spacious it might as well be the hotel from The Shining), didn’t find anything under the stairs or hallway, and so crept out into the night (morning) to go to the bathroom. PLOT TWIST

Normally in scary movies they use a lone wolf howling in the dark to set the creepy tone. But for a biologist, it’s not creepy at all...just, wow. Y’all, I just heard my first wild wolf howling! AS IF THE MYSTERY BUMP IN THE NIGHT WASN’T ADRENALINE ENOUGH. So hyped rn.

So I basically floated to the bathroom house, passed three sleeping feral dogs (they barked til 2, they were over the wolf), and am now back to listening to something drag things around in the room next door.

Sorry folks, I got nothing. I’ve been awake for nearly 4 hours- I’m disappointed, too. Given that Rodentia is the largest order on planet earth, I’m guessing there are two species in this place, and that one is the size of a cat.

However, if the bigger one crawls on my face, I am DEFINITELY going to punch it.

Oops, gotta clarify: Rodentia is the largest *mammalian* order. And maybe also the loudest, damn.

Anyway I think I’ll lie here for an hour and pretend I was sleeping all night, we’re leaving this area in the morning and on to the next site. Idk what’s out there, but it’s downstairs in the hallway now, moving things around.

Not sure how to end this given so many people have been following this all night, so I guess I’ll close with a reminder that tomorrow is Election Day and your vote counts. Vote!
