I feel like the 90's - 00's the culture was much more, well, mean and judgey in general (see the treatment of Britney Spears vs the reevaluation thereof today) so we didn't notice, but I feel like this is part of why the Harry Potter series never quite clicked with me.https://twitter.com/JoeAuerbach/status/1363912875342000132 …

I am currently reading my daughter the Harry Potter books oh, and she's just an incredibly mean author. Almost every page of that book is her mocking someone for no reason at all. Also, I'm fascinated by her assumptions about fat people.

A few days ago I've met someone who actually liked the plotline about the Elf Liberation Front and tried to use that to sell the book series to someone else and it was a really weird experience!

The 70s and 80s I feel were even worse. I was born way too early. >:P

I think it was the peak of Gen X cynicism-as-coolness culture which then rapidly faded into the kind of overly sincere cultural moment that lasted up until nowish

And some tried to hide it with comedy lol, sure some worked but others didn’t click for damn sure.

I've been rewatching a lot of early america's next top model seasons in quarantine and the judges comments are often shocking by how cruel and mocking they are especially in the first few seasons. I feel like that was just what was expected on reality tv in the 2000s

It never clicked with me because I thought it was boring. It seems like HP was many people's first exposure to fiction and it showed. That many people realize it was also mean and backwards in retrospect is just icing on the cake.

Yup! I only read old journals and books about animals as a kid. Then my 4th grade teach read the first 3 HP books to my class and I was hooked. Strangely enough HP was never a series I wanted to go back to once it was done. I was already starting to move on by the last book.
