It’s time to write Book 3*, which means neologisms thread... 2 neo-boogaloo! For this book the neologisms are words/terms/phrases that were not in use in 2009, when the third book takes place. *it has a title but I can’t share it because it hasn’t been OK'd by the publisher yet!pic.twitter.com/vrJ2TglsNu

The way I determine whether a term was or was not in use back then is a combination of Google trends, urban dictionary, internet archive and anecdotal evidence. This is by no means meant to be scientific.

Also what I consider a neologism is less “did this term exist at all” so much as “would this character realistically know/use this term” — many terms that are mainstream today were first common in marginalized groups (i.e. any of the terms popularized by RuPaul’s Drag Race.)

A note - people who say “This was TOTALLY in common use back then” are probably wrong. Not always! But usually. Human memory is extremely plastic, and things that are common now have a way of feeling like they have always been around.

Finally, this is just a thread about neologisms for when, as I'm writing, I sometimes include a term & then realize "oh wait they didn't say that back then did they?" It’s just for fun, so there’s no need to be contrarian about it. Okay? Okay. today's entry: "heckin'"

today's entry: "cultural appropriation"* *while yes there was some light use in academia and the broad concept existed, the term itself would not become a mainstream household term until a few years later
