“Spoiler culture,” in addition to promoting very, very bad ways of engaging with media, places a social premium on early access, in order to create urgency in the minds of consumers. Which is especially shitty for people who materially can’t see things opening day/week.
The “fan culture” has been thoroughly harnessed and strapped firmly into their product cycles. Paid influencers, react videos, junkets for e-celebs, fan theory clickbait. Everything is a part of the money-summoning rituals that are modern film productions.
Spoilers are absolutely a modern marketing phenomenon. Shakespeare began most of his plays telling us the ending, for Christ’s sake! If spoilers actually mattered, nothing would be enjoyable the second time around
I mean, that’s not entirely true. I enjoy rereading many books, but I would still be pissed if I didn’t get that first run-through where I didn’t know what happened. The surprise is a pleasure. It’s just interesting how that’s been seized on as a marketing tool
Actually it’s completely true and everything you’ve said is wrong and bad
You forget that Shakespeare plays are structured around being ‘spoilered’ at the start - the events of the play were never designed as a revelation. But revelations are structured into other artworks, & Endgame crashes that individual revelation into mass marketing
I’m a bit perplexed by fans who get excited about the amount of money the movie is making. Is it any wonder that one of the most culturally ubiquitous franchises in the past decade is making a killing at the box office. Why must fans play fantasy shareholder?
Don't see why it's so bad to see a company that makes your favourite films succeed.
After Crimes of Grindelwald, I was genuinely expecting that Avengers: Endgame was going to turn out to be the world's hottest mess and they were just trying to keep people from finding out it sucked.
totally! i know several people who made it a priority to see it asap because they're afraid of encountering spoilers. *guaranteed* the marketing people took advantage of this on purpose.
Yeah, it's all a very blatant strategy to drive up opening weekend numbers for...some...reason? Like, they were going to get those ticket sales anyway, what does it matter if it was a few days sooner?
Every week the movie is in theatres the studio's percentage of the ticket price drops. Most of the money is made opening week. The box office drops significantly in subsequent weeks. If people don't feel compelled to rush out and see it they'll end up streaming it instead.
Ah, so the problem is the studio might only make an obscene amount of money instead of all possible money
Eh, that's fine, as long as corporations don't try to hone in on something like dabbing and casually having fortnite everywhere and I'll be happy.
HOW DARE YOU SPOIL ENDGAME?
on one hand banking on "don't spoil" is a superb way to make people on the fence think "well I guess I HAVE to see it", on the other hand like... who is on the fence about marvel movies. you either love them or feel absolutely nothing watching them
I get that. But honestly, this seems fairly harmless. The message, in the end, is just a highly specific "Dude, don't be a dick". There's subtext of "better see it fast, someone might spoil it for you!", but even then, they're just encouraging basic courtesy.
